Ken Wong is the art director of Spicy Horse American Mcgee's Shanghai-based game development studio.
While i was doing my internship there,Ken Wong filtered down a lot of 2D and 3D techniques to me.
I still remember the first day i step into the office.I don't even know how to unwrap UV and manually texturing it using Photoshop!
But Ken patiently taught me how to do it, and also Tips and Tricks on how to get a clean texture,How to make a good texture for gaming, How to model a good object or character for gaming,How to look into details, etc.
Ken is a very detail oriented guy.And a perfectionist.I always remember how he will rotate my modeling and point at every single mistake i made.
Not even a single dot escapes his sights.
So sometimes it really made me frustrated.Especially when i thought that i cannot do anything else anymore to my model. But when he comes, then I realize how much things more i can do with my model to improve it!
He will sit there beside me, after rotating the model, then he will ask,"Are you satisfied with it?"
Thinking thats the maximum i can do at that time, I nodded, giving it approval,"Yes..."
Then he will say,"A better artist will see better."
Hey, I am not ashamed to say that I am on the learning process. Everybody will always learn something new. But to those who said to himself, ahh, I am good enough, then he will loose to the ones who always said to himself, I am not good enough, I can still do better.
As times goes by and I am learning a lot from Ken, When i go back and look at my creation, I can understand what he means by a better artist can see better.
And I will smile at my own old model.
I haven't make any new modeling up until now, I mean a finished one, but i will soon.
And again, I want to thank Ken for all the things he taught me.
Good luck to him in the future and good luck to American too.
