Say, if you are using windows XP Professional or windows XP home, and you want to get an older game (created below year 1998) then you should first make sure that the .exe file to run the game is set to compatibility mode with window 98/95 (look at categories: gaming tips on the left of this blog on how to do it).
Then if it is still not working, you should go to start> run > then type dxdiag on your windows.
After that, go to your sound configuration and set it to basic.
if it still does not work, right click on your monitor then choose properties. Or you can do it from the dxdiag, now choose your graphic accelerator and slide it to basic.
This should work.
If not, then most probably the game is not compatible with your graphic card. Or you need to download the latest version of your graphic card. always make sure that you have the latest driver for your graphic and sound card!
