The Global Game Jam (GGJ) is the world's largest game jam event occurring annually in late January, and this year's jam, GGJ 2011 is scheduled for January 28-30, 2011. GGJ is a volunteer run organization founded in 2008, built upon the very hard work of the leadership, site organizers and of course, the participants, It brings together thousands of game enthusiasts participating through many local jams around the world. GGJ is a project of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), to broaden the outreach of the game education and the goals of Curriculum Framework while giving the world an opportunity to create games in the world’s largest Game Jam to date. The GGJ prides itself on collaboration, both in organizing as well as making of games. GGJ was inspired by and modeled itself after the Nordic Game Jam.
The 1st annual Global Game Jam was held in January 30-February 1, 2009 with much critical acclaim and success. With over 1600 participants in 23 countries, the GGJ 2009 produced 370 games.
In 2010, the number of participants increased to over 4300 with about 900 finished games.
This year, as of Sunday 23 January 2011 (about 5 days before the event), at about 7:24 pm (local San Francisco time), GGJ 2011 has registered 176jam sites in 44countries, and has 3377 registered jammers.
What is a Game Jam?
Goal is to come together and make a video game, or non-digital game like board game or card game. Participants rapidly prototype game designs and hopefully inject new ideas to help grow the game industry. We share a common theme and constraints. We ask participants to create a game from beginning to end in a prescribed time (GGJ is 48 hours). The brief time span is meant to help encourage creative thinking to result in small but innovative and experimental games.
What is the Global Game Jam?
GGJ brings together talented individuals from within your community. It is unique opportunity for people to push their skills and challenge their way of working. Participants work concurrently along with developers around the globe, we rally around a central theme, which you have 48 hours to create a game. It's our hope that we will see some very experimental realized prototypes that you can continue to work on after the jam. Many games developed in 2009 have become fully realized games. The GGJ is open source, hardware & software agnostic and all projects are protected under a creative commons license. We encourage people to try out new ideas and push themselves within reason. We encourage that participants eat and sleep to stay at their best.

The second team created a game about two robots that are in love. The player plays as the male robot rescuing the female robot
The third team created a game called The Escape. This game is kind of a mixture of Pac Man and Spore by EA Games. In the level map, there are mazes that player can explore. Inside these mazes there are shiny small balls/object that the player can eat. When the player eats it, the player's character will grow longer like a snake. It also has a snake like movements.
The fourth team created a game called Cantagfum. This game is about being inside the human body, specifically inside the veins. The player plays as white blood cells that shoots virus and infections. There are many red blood cells floating about. Once the virus is shot dead, it will turn into eatable white blood cells. Too bad there is no picture for this game.
The last team created a board game. This board game is about languages. There are 4 players that represents 4 countries and those countries represents 4 languages. The objective of this game is to recognize two cards that is in different languages but has the same meaning,When these 2 cards appear, the player who immediately slaps the table and announce which two cards has the same meaning correctly get to keep all the cards. But if the players announce wrongly, he must pay by putting his cards aside according to how many cards were in-between including the announced cards.
