All these years you must have thought it is your dog who does not eat much, and not the food. You buy the same brand just perhaps different taste for years.
In my case, i just found out why my dog did not eat much. I bought proplan for my shiba inu dog for the past two years. I used to buy him royal canine when we were in china. But in jakarta proplan is easier to get so i switched to proplan.
I thought all this time shogun is being picky and difficult, and will only finish his bowl if i mix them with meat. Boy was i wrong!
I did find some small black flea like animals on the bottom of every package but did not think much of it. Until one day i decided to buy 2 different taste, beef and chicken, and open them both. It then took longer than usual to finish. I always reseal the package after i open them.
Then after 2 weeks i found these white2x thing, kinda like fungus on the proplan beef dog food. I stopped giving it to shogun but somehow was busy and forgot to throw it away. 1week later, a stray cat meowed in front of my door and i remembered the dog food, i openned it and spill some on my porch for the stray. To my surprise, in every kibble that has that white2x thingy-there is a fat huge maggot like creature in it!
So that white2x thingy was not fungus or extra seasoning like the store claimed! I suspected it to be the eggs of that black flea like insects that was in the bottom of every packaging!
No wonder shogun always regain his appetite whenever i got a new packaging but by the time it has finished half, he refused to eat more. Because it seems that the bottom half is infested and spoiled while the upper half is still good.
It cannot be seen by human eyes that these food are already spoiled but dogs can smell them. That is why he simply refused to eat it!
I felt so bad for not trusting him more and thought that he was picky with his food. I even tried to handfeed those spoiled food to him!
I promise to myself i will never force him to eat what he does not want to eat anymore. And i will not negatively question his motives. But i will be positive and find out the reasons why he refused to eat. The problem is not in the dog, it must be something else.
Now after i changed his food to science diet, the one with big kibble that can also cleans his teeth, he finishes every single bowl i give him. In the past he only finished half a bowl a day and took one whole day to finish even just that half a bowl, now he finish one full bowl in 5minutes every single day!
I am astonished and very happy. So dog owners out there, be careful with dog foods on the market!
If your dog does not want to eat it, then it is the food, never your dog. Human eyes will not be able to see it, so trust your dog. I bet he can smell it miles away that his food is spoiled with insect poop, pee, eggs and whatnot!
